1.      Is the portrayal of Ryan believable? Are his emotions, reasoning, and behavior consistent with those of a fourteen year old boy?

2.      What do you think of Miranda’s style of parenting? Would you adopt the same course of action that she does?

3.      What themes did you recognize in the book? Which of them spoke to you?

4.      Which horror elements did you find the most alarming? Frightening?

5.      Were you surprised by the final outcome?  Does this type of ending make you more uneasy?

6.      What about the portrayal of Hugo and Max? Does the juxtaposition of their intentions and their antics ratchet up the terror or water it down?

7.      The impact of actions of past multiple generations on the current situation is mentioned frequently. Did this emphasis speak to you? Are you influenced or impacted by the past generations in your own family?

8.      What scene resonated most with you personally in either a positive or negative way? Why?

9.      What surprised you the most about the book?

10.  Do you think the southern setting (coastal South Carolina) affected the storyline and cast of characters?
